Although it is the average Australian’s dream to own a 4 bedroom house with a pool and a huge backyard for a pair of Golden Retrievers, with home prices rising this fast, the immediate reality will probably be a 2 bedroom unit with barely enough room for two person and a Chihuahua.
So we will share our tested-and-proven indoor cage setup for a puppy or small dog, and hopefully this will help those staying in units or apartments who want to buy a small dog.
Flooring

Most apartments have carpet throughout these days, and that’s not the best surface for puppies or just pets in general. So based on our experience, getting a piece of scrap vinyl (say 2m by 1.5m) from your local carpet/flooring shop is an excellent option. Vinyl is easy to clean, scratch resistant, easily rolls up for storage and best of all, they are cheap. Even if you have tiles or floor boards at home, keeping your puppy in a vinyl section is still a good option as tiles and floorboards are not scratch-proof.
Fencing
Now you have a large piece of vinyl lying on your living room, all you need is a play pen to be set on top of the vinyl to keep your puppy in it. Play pens come in different heights so make sure you get the one tall enough for your dog to stop it from jumping out.
Accessories
Once the pen is setup on the vinyl, all you need to do is put your puppy inside. There are many accessories you may need to put inside the pen, such as water bowl, food bowl, toys, bedding, and toilet (if you can’t walk your dog often enough).

Can you please advise what secures your indoor fencing if the puppy/dog jumps on it – won’t it fall over?
Thanks for your message, Craig. Because your play pens are all connected together (as a square or octagon), it is almost impossible for a small dog to tip the entire thing over and escape just by leaning against a panel. But what would often happen when they lean on the panels is the play pen panels will move slightly. One solution is to place a few heavy objects (bricks, yellowpages etc) at the corners to stop the pen from moving.
If you want a nice, good quality dog, he won’t be free. But I suggest dog cages. They are great family dogs and I am not dissapointed with mine. Here is the site of the breeders I got him from.
