Dog Crate
A dog crate
is a metal, wire, plastic, or fabric enclosure with a door in which a
dog may be kept for security or transportation. For best results in
using dog crates, crate training is recommended.
|
|
Plastic dog crates
are moulded two-piece units with ventilation areas along the sides and
a welded steel wire door in front. They're lightweight, portable and
are easily taken apart for storage or travel.
|
|
Wire dog crates
are very popular and depending on your dog's needs, may be a better
purchase than plastic. Although they might not looking as nice as
colourful soft crates and they they are relatively heavier than plastic
or canvas crates, metal wire dog crate
can usually be folded completely flat for storage or transport, they
are easy to clean, chew proof and better value for money.

If you do not need to carry your dog crate
on different sites and mostly use your crate in one place (i.e. your
home, vet clinic, dog grooming business), you can consider getting a
heavy duty dog crate on wheels. The advanatges include sturdy
constructions so they can be stacked, they are good for stronger
breeds, and they can be pushed around the place easily when compared to
other types of portable dog crate .
|
|
Soft dog crates
can always be easily folded for storage or transport and are
lightweight. They provide the dog with a stronger sense of security but
still allow visibility and airflow. They cannot be used with dogs who
are likely to dig or chew at the crate, and they are unsuitable for
transporting dogs in any type of vehicle

It is important to pick a dog crate
that is the correct size for the pet and is appropriate for its
purpose. A dog crate for use at home can be larger than one used for
travel.
Along with their
natural instinct to sleep in a den, puppies are born with the
instinctive desire to keep their dens clean. Given the opportunity,
most puppies will seek out an area to relieve themselves that's far
away from where they eat, play and sleep. Using a dog crate takes
advantage of this natural tendency and helps the puppy to learn to
control himself in between trips outside. Therefore in toilet training,
a dog crate
that is too big will allow your dog to defecate at one end and sleep in
the other, which undermines one of the purposes of toilet training.
During air travel, an oversized dog crate
does not permit the pet to use the sides easily as a brace during
turbulence, so they will be rolling around inside the cage. Likewise,
dog crates that are too small pose a health risk by restricting and
preventing proper air-flow and ventilation.
